◎ Character's Name: Pearl
◎ Character's Canon: Steven Universe
◎ Character's Age: several hundred years old at least
◎ Canon Point: End of Season 2 Episode 15 (Friend Ship)
◎ Background/History: Steven Universe wiki article
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Pearl can interface with Gem technology, but that seems to be how one works it in general. It's possible that she could connect to some of the tech that appears in Cerealia, but that would need to be discussed prior since she's 'built' with Gem stuff in mind. So, no, not a hacker, but yes, could potentially be of use in future plots if it's deemed necessary/fun.

◎ Personality: To be a knight, one has to be self-sacrificing; they must be willing to give up everything in the name of someone else's cause. And that's the code that Pearl meant to live by, back when her chosen leader, Rose Quartz, was still alive and well. While we don't know much about 'Pearls' in the grand scheme of Gem society, what little has been revealed heavily implies they're a class that usually follows the lead of stronger Gems. Of their gay space rock alien race, Pearls are—at least in part—best when paired alongside others. And so, that was Pearl's mission for some time—she was Rose's confidante, and she created herself around that image. Even when Rose's desires went against their homeworld's, Pearl was ready to fight in her name. Arguably, this choice was a mixture of both nurture and nature; she's born to suit a role, but she developed a personal profound love for Rose. Unfortunately, that love and knightship can turn into an unhealthy obsession. Pearl wants to be someone that inspires those she's chosen to fight alongside for. She craves being needed and useful, whether it's to her fellow Crystal Gems, or to Steven (her kinda adopted son and Rose's biological). This can make her an excellent teacher, a compassionate helicopter mom, and all around dependable rock-person. That is, as long as she doesn't lose her head. And boy, can Pearl lose her head.

While her intentions are never to wound those she cares for, Pearl can be exceptionally manipulative. When the rush of love and unity from creating Fusion with Garnet proves too hard to resist, Pearl is ready to lie and sneak around to create more situations they would need to Fuse for. When given the chance to show Steven the galaxy after being stuck on Earth for centuries, Pearl loses it for a while and is ready to kidnap him for a short 'fifty years.' These actions are undeniably selfish, but they don't come from a place of malice. More than anything, Pearl's driven by her dependency. Being alone and unneeded is horrifying, and she can only pretend to be perfectly level-headed for so long. It works for a time, of course. At first glance, Pearl comes off as logical and well put-together. She's got a mad high INT score and serious dedication to swordsmanship and a shoujo-aesthetic. Likewise, most of her choices are rational, up until emotion starts to place too large a role. Pearl's the graceful swan that will honk and beat its wings up a storm if something causes a big ripple in its pond. At the same time, she does fight hard to be dependable and someone worth looking up to. It wouldn't be a stretch to say she's the most traditionally mom-like of all the Crystal Gems. The way she minds Steven, teaching both him and Connie useful skills while being the most overprotective of the bunch shows Pearl has a maternal streak alongside her protective one. She cares too deeply and sometimes without allowing herself to fully understand the other person's emotions in turn.

While it's clear that Pearl loved and admired Rose, and that she loves and will do most anything for Steven, her relationship with other characters in the show can be more complex. Amethyst is brash and loud-mouthed, which makes her a load of fun for Steven, but causes conflict between herself and Pearl. They care for each other, but they have very different methods of expressing themselves— hovercraft mom vs. super laid back mom… we've all seen that combo end in the divorce. And yet Pearl and Amethyst do have a good relationship when they make themselves work together (this shows in their stable Fusion of Opal). In recent episodes, Amethyst has become someone Pearl could lean on and find support in. They've both developed, working on understanding each other to a greater extent, no matter how their unique perspectives grate. Then there's Garnet—the sorta-leader of the Crystal Gems in Rose's absence. Pearl adores Garnet and definitely looks up to her, wanting to impress the other Gem at any available opportunity. In the way she assumed Rose knew what was best, she's placed a similar onus on Garnet, sure that Garnet is strong and resilient where Pearl is not. That's not the case, as shown in one of the latest aired episodes wherein Garnet admits she can't always be strong and oft times looks to Pearl for inspiration. Their mutual respect and closeness was tarnished by Pearl's action, but is slowly re-budding and prior to that was rather constant.

Now we come to Greg. A lot of Pearl's character can be seen in how she relates to Steven's human father. Back in the 80s, Pearl was antagonistic to Greg, flaunting that she was a Gem and could combine with Rose. She let her jealousy guide her and—yeah, okay. Let's be real: space-girl was salty as the brimstone mines of Hell. However, in the present day and age, Pearl treats Greg with a good deal more respect. There are times their methods of caring for Steven clash, and there is the whole 'you married the woman I was in love with' thing hanging between them, but she'll help him fix his van. She'll spend a day with him and Steven talking about aerospace engineering. The old resentment isn't a hundred percent in the past, but she's not the same person she was back when legwarmers were a thing. Pearl is constantly changing and growing; she has many faults, but she is definitely capable of learning from them.

In the end, Pearl cares, but she can be snippy. She'll do anything for someone, but that 'anything' can include stuff they may not be keen on. She's the shoujo princess-and-knight two-for-one combo. As much as she carries onto the past, she does attempt to live in the present, and she doesn't cling onto her mistakes—only unhealthy mentalities concerning her own worth. She's a good space rock at her core.

(Get it?)

◎ Powers/Abilities: Steven Universe wiki; Pearl's abilities
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: There isn't anything 'physically' on Pearl, but she does have access to her spear and other weaponry through the Gem on her forehead. I'm not sure if that would count as 'inventory' since it's technically part of her power set.

CEREALIA-Specific

◎ Element: Water
◎ Sense: Touch; like most Gems, Pearl is a dancer and very tactile… everything is about movement and the ability to touch one's partner, one's weapon, etc.
◎ Seven Character Traits: ( dedicated, graceful, enthusiastic ) | ( obsessive, selfish, idolizes ) + teacher
